Bess Engineer
Shape the future of grid-scale energy storage, guiding BESS projects from development to operations and helping build safer, smarter renewable energy assets.
This is a highly practical and commercially connected role, supporting projects across origination, development, design, procurement, grid connection, delivery, commissioning and operations. The role will help ensure our storage assets are safe, reliable, technically robust and commercially optimised.
As a small and growing team, we are looking for someone who is versatile, self-starting and confident working across multiple project stages. You will work closely with internal teams as well as external engineering advisors, consultants, OEMs, EPC contractors and other delivery partners, so strong communication, coordination and stakeholder management skills will be critical.
About the Role
The BESS Engineer will act as an internal technical specialist for battery storage projects, providing engineering input, technical judgement and practical support across the project lifecycle.
You will work across development, delivery, commercial, grid and asset management functions, helping to assess technologies, manage technical risks, support procurement decisions and contribute to successful construction, commissioning and operational outcomes.
This role would suit an electrical engineer who brings experience in one of the following areas:
Utility-scale BESS construction and commissioning, with strong practical knowledge of delivery, site readiness, testing, commissioning and contractor coordination; or
Control systems and BESS hybrid integration, with experience across EMS, BMS, PCS, SCADA, grid integration and performance optimisation.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Provide specialist BESS engineering input across project development, delivery, commissioning and operations.
Assess and optimise battery technologies, energy management systems, battery management systems, power conversion systems and overall plant design.
Support technical due diligence for acquisitions, development opportunities and investment decisions.
Contribute to grid integration, GPS, grid connection and power system requirements.
Support procurement activities, including technical specifications, tender evaluations and OEM assessment.
Participate in design reviews, FAT/SAT activities, commissioning planning and project delivery support.
Work closely with external engineering advisors, consultants, contractors, OEMs, EPC partners and network providers.
Analyse asset performance, degradation, availability and lifecycle outcomes.
Identify and help mitigate engineering, safety, delivery and operational risks.
Contribute to engineering standards, lessons learned and continuous improvement across Aula Energy’s portfolio.
About You
You will be a technically strong and adaptable electrical engineer who enjoys working in a growing business where priorities can shift and the ability to take ownership matters.
You will bring:
A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
Experience supporting utility-scale BESS, renewable energy or power system projects.
Strong knowledge of battery technologies, EMS, BMS, PCS, SCADA and control systems.
Experience in BESS construction, commissioning, testing or operational performance, or strong capability in control systems and hybrid integration.
An understanding of grid connection, power systems and renewable energy project requirements.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with external advisors, consultants, contractors and internal stakeholders.
Sound analytical capability and the ability to translate technical information into clear recommendations.
Strong technical writing, problem-solving and stakeholder engagement skills.
Experience working in a renewable energy, utility, OEM, EPC, consultancy or IPP environment.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role will involve helping Aula Energy deliver BESS projects that meet technical, safety, cost and schedule objectives. You will help ensure technology selections are fit for purpose, technical risks are identified early, and assets are positioned to achieve expected reliability, availability and performance outcomes.
You will be trusted for your technical judgement and valued for your ability to work constructively with internal teams and external partners.
